It’s been a month since I started my WordPress blog to get my name out on the internet. You know, ’cause I’m a novelist trying to get a book published, and that’s what we do. I think it’s been going pretty well.
I’d like to thank the 362 people I’ve tricked into following me, 2 or 3 of whom who may actually enjoy my posts. Also, I’d like to preemptively thank all my future followers so I won’t have to bother with that it later.
Thanks!
Now, I’d like to commemorate this auspicious day with a short list of crap I’ve learned since I started blogging.
1. Blogging is addicting! WordPress really utilized flow theory and addiction with notifications on likes, follows, comments, and their little milestones. Those evil geniuses.
2. A post that’s basically a link to an Adventure Time video on Youtube will get you no likes, comments, or followers. Yeah, you need to actually create some original content or make some sort of commentary. Earn those clicks.
3. Being one of the first people to post about Ted Mosby’s reaction to LeBron James’ return to Cleveland (days before Josh Radnor actually released the response) will break your visitor and view records by actually enticing Facebook shares, and leading random people searching on Google to your blog (good for SEO, I guess). However, none of those people will follow your blog because they don’t have a WordPress account. Also, it wasn’t all that hard to break my own records at the time (though the post definitely got more attention than my posts about writing).
4. It’s probably better to go to sleep than publish a post when you’re half awake. Otherwise, you might end up having to edit that post for hours with it still ending up kind of sub par. Respect your 2 readers by making a good faith effort with the quality of your writing.
Alright, this isn’t exactly a one-month anniversary, I’m 2 days late.
Oh thank you! As a newby too I can empathise with your comments and it does make me laugh…thank you!

Thank you. Oh wait, I already thanked you in this post. Well, I guess you get two “thank yous.”
I’m glad you enjoyed this at least a little bit.

That’s the plan; when laziness and view-generation comes together.

Hope you can follow me, too–I write posts about literary characters such as Jane Eyre doing modern things like making grilled cheese; also doing it to promote my novel! Cheers, Annabelle

How on earth did you trick 362 people to follow you in just one month?! I’ve been beavering away for well over a year and only have half that amount. Sigh. Not that blogging should be about ‘The Stats’, of course. Still, I’m genuinely intrigued!

I just try to post at times when I think people are likely to be going through their WordPress Readers. Then, I read, comment, and like other blog posts as appropriate (including blogs I follow and blogs I’m not yet following).
The fact that I like and post about pop culture is probably also helpful. Watching too much TV is finally useful. Take that, whoever coined the phrase “too much TV.”
Oh, crap, apparently too much TV can lead to an early death: http://www.forbes.com/sites/alicegwalton/2014/06/26/too-much-tv-may-be-linked-to-early-death-in-young-adults/
Time to use my Total Gym.

Love this too! So true. Blogging is completely addicting. I get such a crazy “high” from hitting that Publish button! And I agree about going to bed and finishing the post later versus posting something you have halfheartedly tried to finish. Not only should you respect your readers, but your own creative process.
